Introduction

Hong Kong registered design renewal is required before the expiry of every 5 years' term.

The renewal application can be filed within the 3 months before expiry.

The renewed term is also 5 years.

The maximum times of renewal is 4. Thus the accumulated periods of protection are up to 25 years max.

Fees

Our fee for Hong Kong registered design renewal before expiry is :

• 2nd 5 years period (ie. 6th to 10th year) HK$2,800 per design
• 3rd 5 years period (ie. 11th to 15th year) HK$3,200 per design
• 4th 5 years period (ie. 16th to 20th year) HK$3,600 per design
• 5th 5 years period (ie. 21th to 25th year) HK$4,000 per design

The fee is all-inclusive. We do not charge any miscellaneous disbursement.

Multiple Designs

In case where multiple designs were filed in one application, they will all expired on the same date.

However, each of these designs is independent of the others when come to renewal.

Hence, only the ones that are successful in the market or otherwise still have value should be renewed, while the spent ones be left on their own to expire and lapse irretrievably.

 

Timing

The whole process takes within 3 weeks.The renewal request can be filed anytime within the 3 months before the expiry date.

Filing and payment receipt is available immediately at the time of filing.

The Registry's confirmation letter and the official online records updating take place within 3 weeks.

Thereafter, the updated online records showing the new expiry date will be searchable free-of-charge
by anyone from anywhere through the Registry 's internet search website
https://esearch.ipd.gov.hk .

No new certificate will be issued or re-issued.

The new validity period of the registered design is 5 years from the current expiry date.

 

Late Renewal

In case of late renewal within 6 months after the expiry date, there need to be an addition of HK$1,000.

Once that 6 months is over, the registered design is lapsed irretrievably.

 

Details Required

1.	Owner's full name.
2.	Registration number(s).
3.	Expiry date.

No power of attorney is needed from the owner.

The old design certificate is also not needed since the Registry simply process according to its
computer records which is available online at the Registry 's search website https://esearch.ipd.gov.hk .
